Refrigerator Runs Constantly? Here's What to Check

You notice the hum never stops. On a lot of newer refrigerators, that's actually by design, not a warning sign. Here's how to tell a normal compressor from one that's working overtime to make up for a real problem.

Quick answer: if your refrigerator has an inverter or variable-speed compressor, which most models made in the last several years do, running for long stretches or seemingly all the time is often completely normal. It only points to a real problem if the fridge is also warm, frosted up, or noticeably louder than usual.

Older refrigerators cycle a single-speed compressor on and off every 10 to 20 minutes, so silence between cycles used to be the expected sound of a healthy fridge. Newer refrigerators, and most mid-range and premium models sold since the early 2020s, use an inverter compressor that ramps up and down instead of switching off completely. Long runtimes on one of these is the compressor doing exactly what it was designed to do.

That said, a compressor working around the clock is also exactly what happens when a refrigerator is losing cold air somewhere and fighting to keep up. Below is how to tell the two apart, plus the real faults that cause any refrigerator, inverter or not, to run nonstop.

Why won't my refrigerator's compressor shut off?

1. Inverter compressor running as designed

A single-speed compressor is either fully on or fully off, so it cycles in short bursts you can hear start and stop. An inverter compressor instead adjusts its speed to match how much cooling is actually needed, which usually means long, quiet, low-speed runs rather than the old on-off rhythm. Manufacturers moved to this design because it holds a steadier internal temperature and uses less electricity overall, even though it sounds like it's running more.

Signs this is normal inverter behavior, not a fault:

  • Fridge and freezer both hold their normal temperature when checked
  • The sound is a steady, low hum rather than a labored or straining noise
  • Nothing is frosted, warm, or leaking anywhere in the unit

Can you fix it yourself? There's nothing to fix. If the temperature checks out fine, this is the compressor working correctly, and no repair is needed.

2. Dirty condenser coils

The condenser coils, usually behind a bottom kickplate or on the back panel, release the heat the refrigerator pulls out of its interior. A thick coat of dust and pet hair acts like a blanket over them, so the coils can't shed heat efficiently and the compressor has to run longer and harder to get the same cooling result. This is the single most common cause of a refrigerator that runs constantly.

Signs it's the condenser coils:

  • It's been more than a year, or ever, since the coils were vacuumed out
  • The kickplate or back panel area feels warmer than the rest of the unit
  • Fridge has pets in the home, or sits in a dusty area like a garage

Can you fix it yourself? Yes, usually. Unplug the fridge, pull the bottom kickplate or slide the unit out, and vacuum the coils with a brush attachment or a dedicated coil brush. This is the one cause on this list worth checking first, since it costs nothing and takes about ten minutes.

3. Failing condenser fan motor

A fan pulls air across the condenser coils to help them release heat. When that fan motor weakens or seizes, the coils stay hotter than they should, and the compressor keeps running to compensate, the same end result as dirty coils but caused by a failing part instead of dust buildup.

Signs it's the condenser fan:

  • A rattling, grinding, or buzzing noise from the back or bottom of the fridge
  • Condenser coils feel hot to the touch even after cleaning
  • Noise gets louder or changes pitch when you nudge the fridge slightly

Can you fix it yourself? Partially. You can confirm the coils are clean first to rule that out, but testing and replacing the fan motor itself usually means pulling the back panel and involves a part that's specific to the model.

4. Door seal no longer sealing

The rubber gasket around the door keeps cold air in and warm, humid room air out. Once it cracks, flattens, or comes loose from age, warm air constantly seeps in around the edges, so the compressor never gets a break because the fridge is essentially trying to cool the kitchen along with itself.

Signs it's the door seal:

  • A dollar bill or piece of paper slides out easily when the door is shut on it
  • Visible cracking, warping, or a gap where the gasket meets the door
  • Condensation or frost forming near the door edges

Can you fix it yourself? Often yes. Replacement gaskets are sold by model number and typically snap or screw into a channel around the door, no special tools required.

5. Overstuffed fridge blocking vents

Cold air moves through the fridge and freezer via a set of internal vents, and it needs a clear path to actually reach the front and bottom of each compartment. Packed shelves, tall containers pressed against the back wall, or boxes blocking a vent can trap cold air in one corner while the rest of the fridge reads warm, so the system keeps calling for more cooling that never physically arrives where it's needed.

Signs it's blocked airflow:

  • Problem started right after a big grocery trip or holiday cooking
  • One area feels noticeably colder than another inside the same compartment
  • Vents (small slotted openings, usually on the back wall) are visibly blocked

Can you fix it yourself? Yes. Leave a gap around the back and side vents and avoid stacking items directly in front of them. This alone resolves a surprising share of the calls we get for this symptom.

6. Refrigerant leak in the sealed system

Refrigerant is what actually carries heat out of the fridge as it cycles through the sealed system. A slow leak, usually from a pinhole in the tubing or a worn fitting, means there's less refrigerant available to do that job, so the compressor runs longer and longer trying to reach a temperature it can no longer hit with what's left in the system.

Signs it's a refrigerant leak:

  • Fridge runs constantly and still isn't reaching the set temperature
  • An oily residue near a coil or fitting on the back of the unit
  • Every other cause on this list has already been ruled out

Can you fix it yourself? No. This requires EPA-certified equipment to recover, leak-test, and recharge the sealed system, it isn't a DIY-safe or legal repair.

7. Faulty temperature control board

The control board reads the internal thermistor and decides when to signal the compressor to speed up, slow down, or stop. When the board itself malfunctions, it can get stuck telling the compressor to keep running even after the fridge has reached a safe temperature, essentially a false alarm the rest of the system has no way to override.

Signs it's the control board:

  • Fridge is holding temperature fine, but the compressor never seems to rest even briefly
  • Every mechanical cause above, coils, fan, seal, airflow, has been ruled out
  • Display panel shows an error code or behaves erratically

Can you fix it yourself? No. Diagnosing a control board fault means testing it against the thermistor and compressor relay readings, which needs a multimeter and the model's wiring diagram.

Normal inverter hum vs. an actual fault

The fastest way to tell these apart is to check the temperature, not the sound. If the compressor is simply running long cycles and the fridge and freezer both hold their normal temperature with nothing frosted, warm, or leaking, there's nothing to fix. What to check yourself first

  1. Check the actual temperature. Use a separate thermometer or your fridge's display to confirm whether it's really holding temperature or not.
  2. Clean the condenser coils. Unplug the fridge and vacuum the coils behind the kickplate or back panel.
  3. Test the door seal. Close the door on a piece of paper and see whether it slides out freely.
  4. Clear the vents. Make sure nothing inside is blocking the internal air vents, especially on the back wall.
  5. Give it 24 hours. If you just cleaned the coils or reorganized the fridge, the compressor may keep running for a while as it catches back up before settling into a normal rhythm.
