9 Common Causes and What to Check

The light comes on, the fan hums, but the milk is warm. Here is what a technician looks for, which checks you can safely do yourself, and when the problem needs a professional.

Quick answer: when a refrigerator has power but no cold, the cause is nearly always one of four things: restricted airflow, a failed fan motor, a defrost fault that has iced over the evaporator coil, or a compressor start relay that has given up. The compressor itself is rarely the problem.

A refrigerator that stops cooling has a clock attached to it. Refrigerated food is generally considered unsafe after about four hours above 40 degrees, so working through the likely causes in the right order matters.

Below are the nine we see most often across the Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley, roughly in order of how common they are, with the symptoms that separate one from another.

Why is my refrigerator not cooling?

1. Dirty condenser coils

The condenser coils shed the heat your refrigerator pulls out of the cabinet. Once they are coated in dust, pet hair and kitchen grease, that heat has nowhere to go, so the compressor runs longer and longer while the interior slowly warms. This is the most common cause of gradual cooling loss, and the one homeowners are least likely to have ever checked.

Signs it's the condenser coils:

  • Cooling has slipped over weeks rather than failing suddenly
  • The compressor runs constantly and rarely cycles off
  • Visible mat of dust when you look behind the kick plate

Can you fix it yourself? Yes. Unplug the fridge, pull off the kick plate and vacuum the coils with a brush attachment. Worth doing every 6 to 12 months, sooner in a home with pets.

2. Condenser fan not running

The condenser fan blows air across those coils. If the motor seizes or the blade jams, the coils cannot shed heat even when they are spotless. Left alone this one escalates, because an overheating compressor eventually trips its thermal overload and shuts down completely.

Signs it's the condenser fan:

  • No airflow or fan noise underneath while the compressor runs
  • Compressor is hot to the touch and cuts out intermittently
  • Grinding or rattling from the bottom rear before it went quiet

Can you fix it yourself? Partly. Unplug and check the blade turns freely by hand. Replacing the motor means working beside live compressor terminals, so that part is a technician job.

3. Evaporator fan failure

In a frost free refrigerator all the cold is made in one place, the evaporator coil behind the freezer's back panel, then blown across to the fresh food side by the evaporator fan. If that fan stops, the freezer stays cold and the fridge does not. This is the usual answer when someone says the freezer works but the fridge doesn't.

Signs it's the evaporator fan:

  • Freezer is cold, fridge section is warm
  • No air moving from the vents inside the fresh food compartment
  • Chirping or squealing from the freezer before cooling failed

Can you fix it yourself? Usually not. Reaching the fan means pulling the freezer's rear panel, and a frost blocked coil produces almost identical symptoms.

4. Frost blocked evaporator coil

Frost free models melt off light frost several times a day using a small heater. When the heater, its thermostat or the defrost board fails, that frost turns into a block of ice that seals the coil and stops air passing through it. The giveaway is that cooling recovers after the fridge sits unplugged, then fails again a few days later.

Signs it's the defrost system:

  • Visible sheet of ice on the back wall inside the freezer
  • Cooling improves after a long unplug, then degrades again
  • Fan noise that sounds like blades striking ice

Can you fix it yourself? You can confirm it by unplugging for 24 to 48 hours to thaw the coil. Working out which of the three parts actually failed takes meter testing.

5. Door gasket not sealing

A worn or deformed gasket lets warm, humid room air leak in around the clock. The fridge runs longer, never quite reaches its set point, and the extra moisture speeds up the frost buildup behind cause 4.

Signs it's the door seal:

  • A dollar bill closed in the door slides out with no resistance
  • Visible cracks, flattened sections or mold on the gasket
  • Condensation forming around the door frame

Can you fix it yourself? Often yes. Clean it first, since sticky residue is a frequent culprit. Gaskets are model specific, so order by exact part number.

6. Blocked air vents

Every refrigerator has vents where cold air enters the fresh food compartment and returns to the freezer. Push a casserole dish or a stack of containers against them and circulation to the whole compartment stops, while whatever sits right at the vent freezes solid.

Signs it's airflow blockage:

  • Some areas too warm while items near the vent are frozen
  • Trouble started right after a big grocery run or a holiday
  • The fridge is packed tight against the back wall

Can you fix it yourself? Yes, entirely. Leave two to three inches clear in front of interior vents, and avoid lining shelves with foil or trays.

7. Wrong setting or faulty sensor

The thermistor tells the control board what the temperature inside actually is. When it drifts or fails, the board stops calling for cooling because as far as it knows the fridge is already cold. Before assuming a fault, rule out a bumped dial, vacation mode, or demo mode left switched on after a power cut.

Signs it's a sensor or control fault:

  • Compressor never runs and the cabinet sits at room temperature
  • The display set point does not match what you can feel inside
  • Trouble began immediately after an outage or a surge

Can you fix it yourself? Check the settings and try a five minute power cycle. Beyond that, testing a thermistor means comparing its resistance against the manufacturer's chart.

8. Compressor start relay

The start relay is a small part on the side of the compressor that gives it the jolt it needs to start. Relays fail far more often than compressors do, and when one goes, nothing cools anywhere in the unit. It is also the most misdiagnosed failure in the trade, because the symptom sounds exactly like a dead compressor. That is how people end up replacing a refrigerator that needed one inexpensive part.

Signs it's the start relay:

  • Clicking every few minutes from the bottom rear, then silence
  • A short hum or buzz that stops after a second or two
  • Both compartments warm while the lights and fans still work

Can you fix it yourself? No. The relay sits at the compressor's live terminals, and the start capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even with the unit unplugged.

9. Refrigerant leak

The sealed system is closed by design and should never need topping up. If refrigerant has escaped there is a leak, and simply recharging without finding it buys a few months at best. This is the least common cause on the list, and the only one where replacing the appliance is genuinely worth weighing, though on a built in Sub-Zero or Viking repair still usually wins.

Signs it's the sealed system:

  • Compressor runs constantly but nothing gets cold
  • Only a small patch of the evaporator coil frosts, the rest stays bare
  • Oily residue near tubing joints or the compressor

Can you fix it yourself? No, and not legally. Refrigerant handling requires EPA certification along with recovery equipment and a vacuum pump.

Fridge warm but freezer cold

This combination narrows things down fast, because it tells you the compressor and sealed system are working. Cold is being made, it just isn't reaching the fresh food side. In order of likelihood:

  1. Evaporator fan failure, so cold air is never blown across (cause 3)
  2. Frost blocked coil from a failed defrost system (cause 4)
  3. Damper door stuck closed, jammed or with a failed motor
  4. Blocked interior vents, the cheapest to rule out (cause 6)

If the freezer is struggling too, look instead at the condenser coils, the condenser fan, the start relay or the sealed system.

What to check yourself first

  1. Confirm it has power. An interior light does not prove the compressor circuit is live. Test the outlet and check the breaker.
  2. Check the setting. Target 37 degrees for the fridge and 0 for the freezer, and rule out vacation or demo mode.
  3. Listen at the back. A low hum means the compressor is running. Silence or repeated clicking points at the relay.
  4. Feel the interior vents. No airflow suggests the evaporator fan or a frost blockage.
  5. Look at the freezer's back wall. A sheet of ice means the defrost system.
  6. Clean the coils and test the door seal. Two of the easiest causes to rule out for free.

One safety note: unplug the refrigerator before removing any panel, and never bypass a thermal overload or start component to see whether the compressor will run. If you are waiting on a service call, move perishables into a cooler with ice.

When to call a professional

  • The compressor clicks, hums, or does nothing at all
  • Coils are clean and vents are clear, but it's still warm after 24 hours
  • Ice returns to the freezer's back wall after thawing
  • Only part of the evaporator coil frosts over
  • Anything smells burnt, or there is scorching on wiring or the board

This is almost always an airflow problem rather than a cooling problem. Cold air is produced in the freezer and blown into the fridge compartment by the evaporator fan. If that fan fails, or if frost from a failed defrost system blocks the evaporator coils, the freezer stays cold while the refrigerator slowly warms up. A damper door stuck closed causes the same symptom.

A refrigerator usually needs 4 to 24 hours to settle back to a stable 37 degrees after the underlying fault is fixed, depending on how warm the cabinet became and how full it is. If it is still warm after 24 hours, either the original problem was not fully resolved or there is a second fault.

Some causes are safe to handle yourself: cleaning the condenser coils, clearing blocked vents, checking the temperature setting and making sure the door seals. Anything involving the compressor, start relay, control board or sealed refrigerant system needs a licensed technician, both for safety and because refrigerant handling is regulated by the EPA.

As a rule of thumb, repair makes sense if the unit is under 8 to 10 years old and the repair costs less than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator. Built in and luxury units such as Sub-Zero, Viking and Thermador are almost always worth repairing, because replacement runs into the thousands.

A sudden total loss of cooling usually points to an electrical failure rather than gradual wear: a failed compressor start relay, a tripped overload protector, a defective main control board or a power supply problem. Gradual warming over several days points instead to dirty condenser coils, a failing fan motor or frost buildup.
